Who Needs It: If you store photos on your hard drive, you want this.

I passed on early editions of Picasa, but it is too good to miss now. I use Adobe Photoshop Elements for organizing all my photos and Adobe Photoshop for editing, but Picasa wins the also-ran category.  If you don’t want to purchase the other software, this is a fine free alternative, and a clear winner when it comes to locating all those lost photos.
